OPEN! THE MEDITATION OF DRAWING, MANCHESTER CATHEDRAL - MANCHESTER ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS EXHIBITION

β€˜Photography is an immediate reaction; drawing is a meditation’ – Henri Cartier-Bresson

The purpose of drawing can be many things to different individuals; it can describe, record, document, explore, invent, create, visualise and communicate. Drawing is the most basic tool of depiction; it can become a meditational act of awareness. The Manchester Academy of Fine Arts initiated this exhibition to explore and promote the positive aspects of drawing.

Visitors to this exhibition will see how MAFA artists each have their own individual approaches to drawing. We hope you will be inspired by the drawings on display in the Nave of the Cathedral and selected sketchbook images in the Chapter House. Responding to the concept of the exhibition, the public will be able to participate by drawing the surroundings around them. A catalogue will accompany the exhibition with essays by Professor Tim Brennan, Julia Midgley and John Hewitt. The essays examine how drawing is a meditation of the world around us.

Connected to this exhibition, a Bunker Talk was held by The Manchester School of Art in conjunction with MAFA. Professor Tim Brennan, Julia Midgley and John Hewitt were interviewed on the subject of drawing. Click here to watch the talk.

ARTISTS SERVICE & VARNISHING DAY! - 2023 ROYAL ACADEMY OF ARTS SUMMER EXHIBITION

428-4285960_exhibition-24-september-2016-2-january-royal-academy.png

Varnishing Day is a highlight of being selected for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and this year, despite the train strikes, I managed to get down for a day of excitement at the Academy.

A bit about the Summer Exhibition:
The Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition has for more than 250 years given amateur artists the chance to have their work displayed at its prestigious London headquarters. It presents an unparalleled opportunity for amateur artists to have their work publicly displayed and then purchased, although entries are capped at 16,500 and competition is fierce - this year, more than 11,000 people submitted work but less than 10% were successful.

A bit about Varnishing Day:
Historically, artists would visit the galleries to add final touches to their work in situ. Today, Varnishing Day remains a part of the Summer tradition, but it’s now mostly a day to celebrate the artists in the show. Before visiting the show, the artists gather in the courtyard, form a procession down Piccadilly led by a steel band, then attend an artists’ blessing at St. James’s church.

I was absolutely delighted to see my works hung together in gallery VII selected by artist Eileen Cooper OBE RA. She has hung my work in previous years so I am honoured she has chosen my work again. I am also in good company, hung on the same wall as my university tutor John Hewitt.

Here’s my work in situ:

ROYAL ACADEMY OF ARTS
SUMMER EXHIBITION 2023

www.royalacademy.org.uk
13 June - 20 August 2023

I am delighted that both artworks submitted have been selected for this years exhibition. This is the 4th time I have exhibited but the first time I have had both artworks selected.

The world’s largest open submission exhibition is back, featuring work in every medium imaginable.

The Summer Exhibition is our annual celebration of art and artists, run without interruption since 1769. Anyone can submit their work and – if your work is selected by our panel of artists – it will go on display in our Main Galleries.

This year, celebrated British painter David Remfry RA takes the reins as exhibition co-ordinator. Remfry’s Summer Exhibition will explore the theme Only Connect, taken from the famous quote in Howards End by E.M. Forster.

The Summer Exhibition shows every imaginable medium – from prints, paintings, film and photography to sculpture, architectural works and more – by leading artists, Royal Academicians and household names as well as new and emerging talent. Most of the works are available to buy and sales from the Summer Exhibition directly support the exhibiting artists and the RA's charitable work, including training the next generation of artists in the Royal Academy Schools.
